That’s why children use the sense of taste to identify if something is good or bad, sometimes leading to a quick trip to the emergency ward. But what happens if a person never loses such fascination with swallowing inedible objects? Well, this 48-year-old man just found out it could’ve been his last meal, after doctors discovered hundreds of iron nails inside his stomach.

In India, a team of surgeons reportedly removed more than 600 nails from the gut of Pradip Kumar Dhali after a scan revealed a baffling image: a clump of metal inside his body.

According to the Mirror report, Pradip complained of abdominal pain to his family around two months ago. This led them to having him checked and brought for medical imaging.

What they discovered astonished them – a mass of metal inside his gut.

This prompted his family to admit him into Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for closer observation and preparation for surgical extraction.

The medical team’s leader, Dr. Siddhartha Biswas, said that he was surprised to initially find the sharp objects inside Pradip’s frail body. Because of Pradip’s unusual taste for nails, his abdomen was unusually swollen, according to the doctor.

“I am a guest doctor at the local clinic in Dhali’s village. Last month his family had brought the ultrasound report to us. I was shocked to find nails in his abdomen. We decided to operate on him. It was risky as his stomach had become abnormally big and was completely filled with nails. But luckily it did not pierce the stomach.”

Because of Pradip’s mental disorder, his family knew he had a strange habit of ingesting objects. But things took a sharp turn when they discovered his penchant for nails. “The family was asked by Pradip’s psychiatrist to not disturb him so they did not bother much what he was binging on,” Dr. Biswas pointed out.

The surgery was a nail-biting experience for Dr. Biswas and his team since they had to carefully remove every single one of the piercing objects and prevent piercing Pradip’s internal organs.

He explained the procedure:

“We partially cut his stomach and used a magnet to bring out the nails one by one. There were more than 600 nails inside. It was made sure that all the nails he swallowed, were taken out.”
