Sobra-sobrang pagtulog may masamang dulot sa kalusugan na dapat malaman ng marami bago pa mahuli ang lahat!

We all love sleep. Indeed, nothing’s better than climbing in that warm, soft and cozy bed – allowing it to take us to dreamland. But, for you sleep-addicts out there, did you know that sleeping for more than nine hours is bad for your health? Apparently, you increase the risk of sickness whenever you sleep beyond the requisite 6 to 8 hours.

Based on ABS-CBN News’ report, an individual’s arteries might stiffen if he or she sleeps for more than nine hours. This was what Dr. Patrick Gerard Moral had to say on the DZMM program “Ma-Beauty Po Naman.” Dr. Moral is an expert on sleep medicine and an associate professor in the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

He noted that people shouldn’t sleep for less than five hours, but not more than nine hours. He added that an individual’s cortisol levels might spike due to oversleeping. Dr. Moral said that cortisol acts as the body’s natural form of “steroids.”

If these cortisol increase, then there’s a higher chance that an individual’s blood pressure might go up as well. This may also lead to skin complications.

He also noted that individuals who oversleep have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The doctor said, “Mas higher risk for cardiovascular [diseases], mga karamdamang tungkol sa puso at mga ugat natin.”

Dr. Moral said that people could have a “power nap” in between their day to have full hours of sleep. The ideal nap should be around 20-30 minutes in total. He said that it shouldn’t go beyond 60 minutes or an hour.

The associate professor advised people to let go of gadgets or anything that might emit radiation before sleeping. The lights from these screens affect the production of melatonin, making it more difficult to sleep.

In addition, he said that one’s quality of sleep is directly equivalent to the melatonin levels produced.

According to Huffington Post, oversleeping can have the following effects on one’s health: cognitive impairment, depression, increased pain and inflammation, impaired fertility, higher chance of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
