Everyone’s familiar with the phrase “A dog is a man’s best friend,” it’s almost cliché, but all too true. A netizen named Maria Kabs was roaming Quezon City when she chanced upon a homeless boy lovingly cuddling a stray dog. It touched her so much that she took some pictures and shared them on Facebook along with the homeless boy’s story.

11 year-old Rommel Quemenales is the boy in the pictures with his canine companion Badgi. Rommel adopted Badgi around a month ago when he found a lost puppy roaming the streets. He’s completely lost and alone in the world so it would only make sense to embrace a dog in the same predicament and hang out. As Maria’s post says “A dog doesn’t care if you are rich or poor. All he knows is that he loves you very much.”

According to Maria when she asked Rommel where his family is he answered that his parents separated from each other when he was younger. He further elaborated that he sometimes visits his older sister who lives in a different city, when he has enough money to do so. Can you believe that such a young kid is living on the streets all by himself and earning money for himself? Sure, there are lots of street kids around Metro Manila, but just because there are a lot of them, it doesn’t mean that this should be considered normal.

The 11-year-old misses going to school and says that he dropped out after finishing 2nd grade. Although Rommel is a homeless boy, clearly his heart is in the right place, but he was born into truly dire circumstances.
