Manila is now getting its gears ready as it prepares for the Feast of the Black Nazarene. Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada already declared suspension for all class levels and city government work because of the expected influx of devotees coming into the city to touch the holy statue and receive their miracles. But a town in Tarlac has local residents buzzing because they came across a strange “holy object.”
Camiling, Tarlac may skip out this year’s Feast because residents seem to think that they have the next best substitute. New Year’s Eve was a special one for Crispin Martin and his family. He spotted a coconut tree in his backyard and went to harvest fruit from it. But Crispin was met with some resistance as if the coconut didn’t want to be removed.
When he asked his child to check it out, it was there when they discovered the vague image of the Black Nazarene seemingly printed on the husk. Word got out and the family welcomed all the devotees who wanted to check out this “holy image.” One of these people is Carmelita Guillermo who never fails to visit the holy coconut nightly to pray for her health.
Carmelita said:
“Dasal namin yung maayos na kalusugan at sana maayos kami dito.“Other visitors also pray to the “holy object” as well as lighting candles to it. But instead of seeing this as a divine sign or a spiritual omen, experts have a scientific approach to it. They have identified this occurrence as pareidolia, where an image is spotted on random objects. An example of this phenomenon would be people’s faces on sandwiches or clouds in other objects.
