Another creative local artist using recycled materials caught the keen eye of “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.” 35-year-old Rommel Mamangha clearly impressed the TV host with his unique and colorful hobby. Digging through garbage, lurking in small eateries, even hanging out in junk shops, Rommel does it all to collect the medium he uses for his art. What’s his medium? This happy-go-lucky man uses recycled plastic straws to put together his masterpieces.
His routine is quite simple: once Rommel has gathered enough straws for the current project, he washes the used plastic straws and begins to cut them into one-inch pieces. With the use of any available binder, this creative local artist then begins to construct his art.
His biggest piece of work was an enormous piece dedicated to Sen. Manny Pacquaio entitled “Dakila.”
A lot of his artwork usually involve his greatest idol because Rommel is a fan of how the champion boxer started with nothing and worked terribly hard to get to where he is today. This kind of role model speaks volumes to people like Rommel who also had to work at a very young age to help out with his family’s needs. The 35-year-old has a lot of different odd jobs, but once in a while, Rommel gets to focus on his artwork because it also brings in income when needed.
At a very young age, this struggling artist has already shown his talent in this particular area. He admitted that he was attracted to the vibrant spectrum that the colors offered. He also said that he excelled in his art class when he was still in school. Sadly, Rommel’s father never fully supported his craft.
But despite such harsh circumstances, this man never ceased in creating and expressing himself through the gift he was given. No matter how painful life may get, trust that Rommel will always create colorful and positive masterpieces.
