Grade 12 student na taga-Leyte nanalo ng 20milyong piso sa isang International Science Competition.

A Grade 12 student in Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus located in Leyte have won a whopping amount of PHP 20 million after she joined a Breakthrough Junior Challenge, an international science competition.

According to ABS-CBN News, the lucky Grade 12 student is 18-year-old named Hillary Diane Andales. Based on the report, she wanted to prove people wrong about the misconception that most students are bad at physics.

With this in mind, she made her explanation of a certain concept as simple as possible. She shared, “We think na ‘yung physics is all about equations. No, physics is about everything and it matters to everyone.”

There were a total of 11,000 entries in the science competition from about 178 participating countries. Her entry won, which made her received a prize money that amounted to $400,000 or around PHP 20 million.

The report cited that $100,000 of the cash prize would be used to buy equipment for their school laboratory, which would all be named after her.

Meanwhile, $50,000 of the amount would be given to her teacher and $250,000 would be devoted to her college scholarship in the future.

The Grade 12 student admitted that the road to success was not easy for her. She was included among the Top 6 finalists but unfortunately, she did not win during her first entry to the competition in 2016.

She did not lose hope and continued for the best, which motivated her to join the competition once again. Andales said that he is hoping the government would actively support the field of science.

Based on the report, she is a running candidate for valedictorian honors. She wanted to serve as in inspiration to other students so that they may gain interest in physics as well.

According to her, one of her goals would be to create a television science program in the future, like ABS-CBN’s “Sineskwela.”
