There are quite a lot of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) currently employed in Hong Kong, and each has a unique story of how they ended up there. One particularly interesting story is of Tatay Tony, an OFW originally hailing from the Visayas, in Ilo-ilo. He is currently a 64-year-old service crew in Jollibee Mongkok.

Facebook user Amelou Saqueza chanced upon Tatay Antonio “Tony” Espia, Jr. on a visit to Hong Kong, and was inspired by his hard work and determination despite being at an age where most people (especially in the Philippines) already choose retirement.

Amelou shared his encounter with Tatay Tony in a Facebook post dated December 14, 2017:

“Currently i’m in Hongkong, then i met Tatay Tony who is 64 years old but still working here at Jollibee Mongkok and he’s been working in Hongkong for about 28 years already. I am really really so PROUD of you Tatay Tony. I SALUTE and RESPECT you. There’s no descrimination here in Hongkong in terms of age. Some are still working in a fast food chain like 74 years old said Tatay Tony.

He is an Ilonggo, My kababayan.

When OFW blogs picked up Amelou’s story about the 64-year-old service crew and OFW, netizens were all-praises to the elder Tatay Tony, commending his hard work.

Furthermore, netizens applauded Hong Kong and other countries like Singapore for continuously giving opportunities for the elderly while other countries impose a forced retirement at the age of 60, despite some senior citizens being well-abled and in need of a job.

Certainly, our senior citizens deserve to retire during their twilight years. Nonetheless, we salute them for continuing their service to the community.
