ITO ANG ITSURA NG MGA BAGONG JEEPNEYS NA IPAPALIT SA MGA KARAG-KARAG NA PUJs

On October 16-17, 2017, a massive transport strike was held in the Philippines that was spearheaded by the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) and was attended by jeepney operators and drivers. It was a protest to mark their refusal to fully phaseout jeepneys.
In a previous report, President Duterte threatened the operators who refuse to modernize their public utility vehicles by January 2018. He said in a speech he delivered in Camarines Sur, “Sumunod kayo kasi January 1 [2018], kapag may makita ako diyang mga jeep ninyo na hindi narehistro, luma, guguyurin ko ‘yan sa harap niyo.”
He also denied that the modernization program was anti-poor. He stated (referring to the jeepney drivers and operators), “Mahirap kayo? P**ang ina, magtiis kayo sa hirap at gutom, wala akong pakialam.”

But what do the modernized jeepneys look like? According to Rappler, they are environment-friendly and filled with safety features. The source stated that the prototypes had fully followed the specifications of Department of Transportation (DOTr).
Based on the report:
“Jeepneys should be replaced by those powered with Euro 4 engines or electrically-powered engines with solar panels for roofs.”
“The modern jeepney should also be equipped with safety features, such as a speed limiter, closed-circuit television camera (CCTV), GPS, and dashboard camera.”

The modernized jeepney would also have an automated fare collection system that would be compatible with the current payment scheme being implemented by the Metro Manila Rail Transit (MRT-3) which includes a BEEP card.
Apart from that, it would have a projected seating capacity of twenty-two passengers. The report cited that current jeepneys only have a capacity of around twenty passengers, although jeepney drivers usually overload the vehicle.

The source said:
“According to the DOTr, the vehicles will also be equipped with PWD-friendly features and free wifi for the convenience of commuters. They will also [sic] locally made and assembled.”
