Na-Stroke na Lalaki, kinabiliban ng marami matapos gumawa ng Bionic Arm na 'nakokontrol gamit ang isip'.

When life throws your plans in disarray, you can only learn to adjust or adapt to these unforeseen circumstances. Many people often give up when life gets hard – other people who are more optimistic find their own solutions and get creative. Recently, a 31-year-old man from Bali, Indonesia made himself a bionic arm that can be controlled by neurotransmitters in his brain. His name is Wayan Sumardana, and he was able to make this fully-functional arm using junk found around in his own workshop in the village of Nyuh Tebel in the Karangasem regency. Known by many as ‘Tawan‘, he actually suffered a mild stroke six months prior that left his left arm and hand incapacitated. This made working nearly impossible for him.

Similar to the micro-robots that can be controlled by neurotransmitters in the movie “Big Hero 6”, the bionic arm Tawan made functions the same way. Ever since he was a kid, he was already obsessed with machines. After his stroke made it difficult for him to work, he decided to put his electrical engineering knowledge to good use. That’s why Tawan decided to try and make a bionic arm for himself from junk.

One day, according to Tawan, he saw his son crying because he had no allowance for food. It was then that he realized that he had to do something to be able to provide for his family again.

As Tawan explained, the arm works by sending signals from his brain which become amplified when sent to his robotic arm. This is done by wearing a neurotransmitter head gear that he made which is connected to his bionic arm. In an interview, he explained,

“It’s similar to a lie detector. There are electrodes attached to my scalp, whose functions are to take small signals from the head. These signals would not be detected without this device. The signal is brought forward to an enlarged signal and then taken to the micro-control in my back and transferred to the front. For example, I intend to move this part. Are all part of this activity, but depending on our needs. If the tool is not active, my hand silently sticks to the body. The process works like a dynamo; if there is a shortcut, it remains quiet but spends more energy.”

He also said that he wants to inspire people who have suffered strokes themselves, saying “Life is hard, dying is easy.” He said his workshop is open to those who want to come and visit and see the arm for themselves. He is very proud to show that despite its simple design and material, his bionic arm works perfectly.
